Driving Assessments

Driving Assessments

Bernadette Walsh, a member of our Occupational Therapy team, has post graduate training in Driving Assessments. She has been assisting people to return to driving for the past nine years.

Bernadette is able to assess your ability to drive post stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury or amputation. She is able to advise on appropriate modifications to your car controls if required. Bernadette can facilitate these modifications with a registered vehicle modifier on your behalf if desired.

Bernadette also assists older drivers to determine their safe driving ability in line with Roads and Maritime Services (formerly the RTA)

The Driving Assessment is done in two parts (you need to be successful with part 1 before proceeding to part 2):

The first session is a Physical, Cognitive and Visual Assessment to determine if your processing speed; problem solving and hazard identification skills are sufficient for the complex task of driving. This assessment will also identify any visual or physical difficulties that may impact on your ability to drive safely.
The second session is an On Road Assessment. You will go with Bernadette in a dual control car with a qualified driving instructor to assess your driving capacity.
